Kumbh Mela

The Kumbh Mela is the largest gathering on earth. The word Kumbh means urn and the word Mela means fair. The urn is said to contain the nectar of immortality dropped by the gods in four holy places that host the fair alternately every 12 years at 3-4 years intervals. Crowds ranging from 30 to 70 million people gather to bathe in the holy rivers as an act of faith and redemption. Sadhus, Hindu renunciates, sages and seers and their devotees and commoners alike travel from all corners of the country to honor this ancient tradition in these cities that only live for 40 days in a mystical and magical chaos.

Cassadaga

Cassadaga, Florida USA is a town that was founded in the late 1890’s by George Colby, an early practitioner of Spiritualism, a doctrine that fosters mediumship or communication with the spirits of the departed. Spiritualists believe that the soul retains its personality after death and that contact can be established and even maintained with such entities. Cassadaga is exclusively populated by clairvoyants, healers and mediums who sometimes hold séances to help people reach loved ones and witness communication with spirits on the other side of the veil.

Samadhi

In Samadhi, yogis from the Himalayas demonstrate a state of suspended animation akin to virtual death of the senses and stoppage of the bodily functions called Samadhi, which also means death in Hindi. These yogis can be buried, remain under water or in an airtight glass container for extended periods of time. Despite extremely adverse conditions such as the absence of air, water, food and movement and extreme temperature swings, they remain unscathed. Such feats demonstrate that with sankalpa, or will power, the limits of human potential can be mastered and expanded.
